Hiedler Family Winery is situated in the quaint town of Langenlois, the historical center of Kamptal Valley, and produces some of the most intriguing wines in the region. The company was established in 1856 and for over a hundred years existed as a beloved hobby for its owners. Everything changed in 1980 when the winery passed into the hands of Ludwig Hiedler, the first professional winemaker in the Hiedler family. Together with his wife, Maria Angeles, Ludwig acquired a new cellar, changed the principles of vineyard care, introduced new distinctive labels featuring an owl, and transformed the estate into one of the most highly-rated wineries in Kamptal.
In 1992, Hiedler and seven other producers founded the association Österreichsiche Traditionsweingüter and the first classification of the best vineyards in the Danube region. They strive to make wines that reflect the unique terroirs. Later, 26 more wineries joined the association. The estate owns 30 hectares of vineyards classified as 1ÖTW Erste Lage ("Erste Lage"), in 2017 there were only 61 such vineyards in Austria. These vineyards include only the best slopes where Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grow.
Today, Ludwig Hiedler works alongside his sons, Ludwig Jr. and Ditmar. The vineyards follow the principles of organic viticulture: the plots are worked by hand and fertilized only with compost, while wild herbs are planted between the vines, creating a natural balance in the vineyard. The wines are primarily produced with spontaneous fermentation on wild yeasts, minimal sulfur is added, and in most cases malolactic fermentation is not blocked. Thanks to this, Hiedler wines possess a unique texture and depth. They hold the Sustainable Austria certificate, confirming the practice of responsible viticulture.
