Hiedler Family Winery is situated in the quaint town of Langenlois, in the historic center of the Kamptal Valley, and produces some of the most fascinating wines in the region. Established in 1856, the company existed for over a hundred years as a beloved hobby for its owners. Everything changed in 1980 when the winery passed into the hands of Ludwig Hiedler, the first professional winemaker in the Hiedler family. Alongside his wife, Maria Angeles, Ludwig acquired a new cellar, altered the principles of vineyard care, introduced new distinctive labels featuring an owl motif, and consequently transformed the estate into one of the top-rated wineries in Kamptal.
In 1992, Hiedler and seven other producers founded the association Österreichsiche Traditionsweingüter and established the premier classification of the best vineyards in the Danube region. They strive to produce wines that reflect the terroir's characteristics. Later, an additional 26 wineries joined the consortium. The estate owns 30 hectares of vineyards classified as 1ÖTW Erste Lage ("Premier Cru"), of which there are only 61 in all of Austria as of 2017. These vineyards include only the finest slopes, where grüner veltliner and riesling thrive.
Today, Ludwig Hiedler works alongside his sons, Ludwig Jr. and Dietmar. The vineyards follow organic viticulture principles: the plots are tended by hand and fertilized solely with compost, while wild herbs are planted between the vines, creating a natural balance in the vineyard. The wines primarily undergo spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, with minimal sulfur added, and in most cases malolactic fermentation is not blocked. As a result, Hiedler wines possess a unique texture and depth. They hold the Sustainable Austria certification, affirming their practice of sustainable viticulture.
