Chateau Figeac is a stunning estate with a rich history that dates back to ancient times. In the 2nd century AD, a Gallo-Roman villa belonging to the Figeacus family stood on the site. Historical and archaeological research has revealed that this was a noble residence with impressive architecture for its time: doors and numerous narrow windows dating back to around the year 1000 have been preserved.
The cultivation of vineyards and winemaking on these lands thrived from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Figeac was one of the five noble estates in Saint-Émilion and belonged to several famous families. In the 15th century, the estate was passed to the Lescours family, who at that point also owned Chateau Ausone, then to the Kaz family, and later, through the marriage of Marie de Kaz - to the Carles family. It was the Carles family who actively developed modern viticulture and winemaking practices, possessed remarkable entrepreneurial abilities to expand the market, and renovated the building facade that still impresses visitors today.
However, due to an economic crisis caused by the Continental Blockade, Countess Carles-Trajet was forced to sell part of the Chateau Figeac estate.
The modern chapter of Chateau Figeac's history is closely linked to the Manoncourt family. In 1892, the ancestors of the Manoncourt family acquired the core of the estate - three gravelly plots that form the basis of an outstanding terroir. The true revival of Chateau Figeac occurred in 1943 when Thierry Manoncourt released his first vintage. Thierry dedicated himself to studying the terroir specifics, vines, viticulture, and winemaking methods. His efforts were not in vain: in 1955, Chateau Figeac was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classe in the Saint-Émilion Cru Classification system. According to the latest (7th) classification of Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classes wines from 2022, Chateau Figac occupies the top position (along with Chateau Pavie) and holds the highest title - Premier Grand Cru Classe "A".
Thierry, along with his wife Marie-Francoise, made many decisions that contributed to Chateau Figeac's success: they developed an optimal blend formula for the vineyards, improved their cultivation methods, always preserving biodiversity, upgraded the cellars, replaced equipment, and achieved worldwide recognition for their wines. Today, the estate is managed by Madame Thierry Manoncourt, Hortense Idoine Manoncourt, managing director Jean-Valmy Nicolas, and development and promotion manager Frederic Faye. Together, they continue Thierry's legacy, striving to create truly exceptional wines.
